Personal Travel Interests: I love long car rides/road trips. I love driving through woods. Or cornfields or along a coast: Maine, San Diego and Nashville spring to mind. A favorite trip was to Italy: riding horses along the beach in Sardinia. Lake Como, Venice, Turin, walking through Rome … these memories stand out. I love the boat ride to and from the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. It takes one out of the city; calming and serene.
Favorite Experience in NYC: The inflating of the balloons the day before Thanksgiving at the Museum of Natural History.
Getting Personal: I was leading a school group from El Paso TX. The kids were all Hispanic and terrific: respectful and attentive. The teacher in charge said to me “Mike I’m not sure you fully understand. We held 15 car washes to pay for this trip. These kids have never been out of our town, much less been on a plane, much less been anywhere like New York City. These kids will return home, grow up, get married and raise their families and stay in our town. So, this truly is the trip of a lifetime for them, and they will never forget you.” Another group, this one from Hawaii, stood on W. 45th Street and sang me a traditional Hawaiian song of friendship as we said goodbye.
