Duration: 6 hours with a Tour Guide
Experience:
- Newport, Rhode Island is an extraordinary destination! On this tour, you will see and hear about what Thornton Wilder referred to as, “the 9 lives of the city by the sea”!
Filled with natural beauty, history, and spectacular architecture, this stop will not disappoint.
Start with your day with a drive through the older part of town. For over 100 years, Newport thrived as a British Colony. It’s a great story, and you will see some interesting architecture from that era. From there, head out to experience Newport’s incredible views on the famous Ocean Drive. There is no shortage of things to see and talk about in Newport. Eventually, Ocean Drive turns into Bellevue Avenue, where most of the gilded age mansions are located. With your tour guide, you will drive past and discuss many of them, then stop and tour the Breakers, which was once the summer home of Alice and Cornelius Vanderbilt II. The Breakers is the grandest of Newport’s “cottages” and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s wealth at the turn of century in America. You will then stop for lunch before heading to the Elms, another Preservation Society house museum. The Elms was built for industrialist Edward Berwin who made his fortune in coal. The Elms is modeled after the mid-18th century French château d’Asnière, which sits outside of Paris. If time allows, head to the cliff for a short walk.
