There are plenty of things to do in New York at any time of year. But the fall season is a particularly unique time to enjoy some New York adventures. The temperatures are mild during the day and crisp and cool at night. The foliage is changing colors and it creates the perfect backdrop for some of the City’s top spots. Here are four preferred ways to enjoy New York adventures in the fall that differ slightly from the traditional tours of monuments and other conventional tourist attractions:
1. Hudson Valley for fall foliage
Hudson Valley offers some of the finest fall foliage your eyes will ever see. Just a short trip outside the City, it is one of the favorite New York pastimes of locals. Driving through the valley to observe the vibrant colors as it transitions from summer to fall is simply breathtaking. Just be sure to see it before the leaves all drop. Start your New York adventure with a drive through Hudson Valley. The Hudson Valley Resort and Spa is one of the most recommended spot, but be warned: It books up fast during the height of fall foliage season. You can also enjoy apple and pumpkin picking, corn mazes, hiking, or taste some of the greatest wines in the area at the local wineries. This is another side of New York that differs from the concrete jungle you would expect, and it comes highly recommended.
2. Sunset walks on the High Line
Your New York adventures won’t be complete without a visit into the City. After all, they wouldn’t be true New York adventures unless they included quality time with adventures in Manhattan itself. Take a sunset walk on the High Line, a one-of-a-kind public park that consists of a great mix of urban and green space. The skyline views are breathtaking, and seeing them at sunset makes them even better. Fall is the perfect time to take a cool walk along the High Line and enjoy the scenery, and it’s a great place to see on your way to dinner or a night out. With easy accessibility to multiple subway lines, the historic site is a must-see. And there’s a good chance there is some sort of event or activity taking place at the High Line any day of the year, so check out the schedule to see if anything catches your interest enough to arrive a little early.
3. Brooklyn Promenade at dusk
Your adventures in New York City also need to include a trip to Brooklyn, which is just a short subway ride away from Manhattan. Fall offers some of the best sunsets in New York, and one of the best spots to see it is nestled in Brooklyn. End one of your days by walking the Brooklyn Promenade at dusk, and gain a unique perspective of the Manhattan skyline with the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty in close sight. The views are majestic, and the promenade is close to a number of restaurants and other popular sites. Just don’t be in too much of a hurry while here—you’ll want to enjoy these views for a while.
4. Autumn cocktails on a rooftop bar
End your night while enjoying cocktails on one of the City’s rooftop bars. The crisp fall air feels great and offers some extra clarity while enjoying the City lights. Not all of your New York adventures need to be fast-paced. Sit back, relax, and take in the rooftop views that stretch as far as the eye can see. Depending on your desired bar scene, there is a location to suit virtually anyone. From formal to casual, there is something for every mood, personality, or price point. Here is a list of 22 of the top-ranked rooftop bars in New York City. While it’s doubtful you’ll have a chance to try them all, it certainly would be fun to try.
