Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Medal Awarded to Ambassador William vanden Heuvel for Four Freedoms Park

Four Freedoms Park is one of 1,700 Parks, Playgrounds and Recreational Facilities in New York City.

William J. vanden Heuvel received The Municipal Art Society’s 2016 Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Medal in recognition of his role in building Four Freedoms Park, as well as his six decades of distinguished public service.

Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park is located on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island in New York City. It is the first memorial dedicated to the former President in his home state and a New York State Park.

Set into solid granite blocks are the words:

In the future days which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms.  The first is freedom of speech and expression—everywhere in the world.  The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way—everywhere in the world.  The third is freedom from want…everywhere in the world.  The fourth is freedom from fear…anywhere in the world.  That is no vision of a distant millennium.  It is a definite basis for a kind of world attainable in our own time and generation. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, January 6, 1941
