The Music Man on Broadway: Three Reasons Why You Can’t Miss the Show
Hugh Jackman fans rejoice! Sutton Foster fans rejoice! The Music Man Fans rejoice! Heck – any fan of classic Broadway musicals rejoice! The wait is almost over. After being cancelled in the fall of 2020 thanks to you-know-what, rescheduled to spring of 2021, then cancelled and rescheduled again thanks to you-know-what – again, The Music Man, starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster finally has a new, set in stone, opening date thanks to the announcement that Broadway shows are returning to the Great White Way in September.
With previews starting Monday, December 20 th, 2021 at the famed Winter Garden Theater and opening night set for Thursday, February 10th, 2022, this now more than highly anticipated revival of one of America’s most beloved musicals is Broadway’s hottest ticket and THE show not to miss.
Wait. Why is it THE show not to miss? Oh – well if none of that information I spouted out in the first two paragraphs didn’t convince you (Jackman! Foster! Winter Garden! Beloved Musical!) then read on because I have three concrete reasons that should convince you.

It’s Legacy
Even if you’ve never seen The Music Man – chances are very good that you have at least heard of it and its plot. It’s a tale of a con-man, Professor Harold Hill, heading to a midwestern town to form a band and sell said band all the musical instruments they’ll need. The problem? He has no musical instruments to sell and is planning on taking their money and skedaddling before they figure that out. His plan starts to unravel however when Librarian Marian Paroo first gets suspicious of him and then proceeds to fall in love with him. And the rest is history. Did that jog your memory? No? <Sigh>
Well perhaps you have heard a song or two from The Music Man? Gary, Indiana? Till There Was You? No? Well then Ya Got Trouble! With a capital T! Hmmm. Not ringing a bell? Well, Shipoopi! You are missing out there because the music is quite catchy. (Yes, those words in italics are two more of its popular tunes. You caught me.) I’ll tell you what – give the soundtrack a listen – you won’t be disappointed.
In the meantime, here’s the scoop. The Music Man debuted on Broadway in 1957 where it was an immediate hit winning five Tony Awards – including Best Musical – and a Grammy Award for the Best Musical Theater Album that season. In 1962 it was made into a highly successful feature film and was subsequently nominated for six Academy Awards (it won for Best Musical Score) and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. And since then? Well, it has been revived on Broadway twice – once in 1980 and again in 2000, as a TV movie in 2003 and of course, now back on Broadway in 2021. And that’s not to mention the performances put on by countless professional and amateur theater companies as well as those high school drama club revivals!
And when you get right down to it – it’s really just one of those feel good stories – complete with comedy, romance and even some valuable lessons. It’s a show that the entire family can enjoy – and sing – and perhaps dance – along too. And who couldn’t use a joyful, uplifting musical right about now?
It’s Star-Studded Cast
Did I mention who the lead roles of Professor Harold Hill and Librarian Marian Paroo are being played by? Oh, I did? Well, they are sooo worth mentioning again. That would be two-time Tony Award winner and Academy Award nominee Hugh Jackman and two-time Tony Award winner and Grammy nominated Sutton Foster.
But that’s not all because actually this production features a host of Tony Award winners including Jayne Houdyshell as Mrs. Shinn, Jefferson Mays as Mayor Shinn, Marie Mullen as Mrs. Paroo and Shuler Hensley as Marcellus Washburn. But wait! There’s more! It’s not just the cast that is impressive. The show is directed by four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks and features choreography by Tony Award winner Warren Carlyle. And rounding out the big names with fabulous resumes are acclaimed producers Kate Horton (who took on the role of executive producer after Scott Rudin stepped down following allegations of workplace harassment), Barry Diller and David Geffen.
Here’s hoping the tradition of standing at the stage door, sharpie in hand to get your Playbill signed by the cast as they exit, returns along with the Broadway shows!
