There will also be beer and wine gardens, food, craft vendors, and official merchandise for the event.
Historic Newport Mansions
Newport has one of the highest concentrations of colonial homes in the nation. The area is known for its Gilded Age mansions, or “summer cottages” as they were fondly referred to, were created to mimic the styles of royal palaces in Europe. For an afternoon wrapped in luxury, tour some of Newport’s most notable mansions.
Some of the more famous mansions include The Breakers, The Elms, Marble House, and Kingscote. The Breakers is a Vanderbilt mansion on Ochre Point Avenue that was a summer home for Cornelius Vanderbilt II. Vanderbilt had the villa built to replace a wood-framed home with a 70-room Italian Renaissance-style palazzo. The Elms served as the summer residence for the coal titan Edward Julius Berwind in the late 1800s. Berwind brought in Allard and Sons of Paris to decorate the home in the style of a French Chateau.
Marble House was built in the late 1800s for William K. Vanderbilt and also served as a summer home for the family. The “more modest” mansion was inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles. Kingscote is the dream of southern planter George Noble Jones and is a landmark of the Gothic Revival style American architecture.
